Strategic Collaborators

AstraZeneca is a pharmaceutical and biotechnology company with whom we have been working with since 2013.  

 Our partnership provides AstraZeneca with exclusive rights and licenses to research, develop and commercialize potential therapeutic mRNA medicines that target cardiovascular disease and cancer.

We established a multi-faceted relationship with Merck, a pharmaceutical company, in 2015.  

This alliance is focused on the research, development, and commercialization of mRNA medicines for the prevention and treatment of viral infections and cancer. 

Vertex is a biopharmaceutical company with whom we are working with on the discovery and development of mRNA medicines for the treatment of cystic fibrosis (CF).  

 From treating the underlying cause of CF to exploring the potential utilization of pulmonary mRNA delivery, this alliance allows us to collaborate and explore the potential of mRNA medicines. 

BARDA (Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority) is a U.S. Department of Health and Human Services responsible for the procurement and development of medical countermeasures.  

 In September 2016, we received an award of up to approximately $125 million from BARDA to help fund our Zika vaccine program.

DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) is a research and development agency of the United States Department of Defense responsible for the development of emerging technologies for use by the military. 

 In October 2013, DARPA awarded Moderna up to approximately $25 million to research and develop potential mRNA medicines to primarily support our vaccine and antibody programs to protect against Chikungunya infection. 

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is an American private foundation founded by Bill Gates and Melinda French Gates. 

 In January 2016, we entered a global health project framework agreement with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to advance mRNA-based development projects for various infectious diseases.  

The Karolinska Institute is a research-led medical university in Stockholm, Sweden. The Karolinska University Hospital is a teaching hospital affiliated with Karolinska Institute. 

 Moderna will sponsor research grants for scientists at both institutions to conduct preclinical research with novel mRNA Therapeutics™.  

The Institut Pasteur is a private, non-profit French foundation dedicated to the study of biology, microorganisms, diseases and vaccines.  

Moderna will sponsor programs of preclinical and clinical research aimed at identifying and developing new approaches to combatting known and emerging viral and bacterial diseases using mRNA technology.
