Highlights from HLTH 2024: Advancing Health Equity and AI Innovation
For the third consecutive year, Moderna was a Health Equity sponsor at HLTH, which brings together the entire healthcare ecosystem annually to focus on health innovation.
A key highlight from our presence at HLTH was a fireside chat titled "Accelerating Vaccine Development to Minimize the Threat to Global Public Health." Moderated by Hamilton Bennett, Senior Director of Vaccine Access and Partnerships at Moderna, the discussion emphasized the need for rapid vaccine development to combat emerging viral threats. Dr. Nicole Lurie, CEPI’s Executive Director for Preparedness and Response, served as a co-panelist, discussing CEPI’s 100 Days Mission and its focus on addressing both speed and equity in vaccine distribution.
The conversation underscored the critical role global partnerships play in ensuring we have the right systems, processes, and innovations in place to respond effectively and equitably to potential pandemics. Building trust across health ecosystems and communities was highlighted as essential for collaboration and success in mitigating public health threats. In another key session, Andrew Giessel, Head of AI Engineering at Moderna, took part in the panel “Algorithms & Assays: The Future of AI in Drug Discovery,” alongside experts including Dr. Christina Jenkins, Convergent Ventures, Mary Rozenman, Insitro, Nadia Harhen, SandboxAQ, and Uli Stilz, Novo Nordisk. The discussion focused on how AI can revolutionize drug discovery, especially by identifying patterns in biological data that could take years to detect through traditional methods.
Andrew highlighted the vital role of integrating AI across the entire research and development pipeline. He also stressed that fostering a culture of continuous learning is essential for accelerating AI adoption within organizations.
