Initiative Sparks Change and Inspires Others
Sam Hernandez, Senior Research Associate in Pathology Sciences, has followed a path that blends cutting-edge science with a deep commitment to community. His work focuses on developing complex in vitro models to explore biological processes at the smallest scales, but beyond the science, Sam is driven by collaboration and making a broader impact.
Sam’s journey to Moderna began with a clear ambition to contribute to meaningful scientific work. “I graduated in 2021, and I always knew I wanted to pursue a career in science,” Sam shares. After earning his degree from Dartmouth College—as one of the first in his family to attend college—Sam was drawn to Moderna’s mRNA research. “I was really inspired by Moderna’s mission and how they were using next-generation technologies. It was the perfect fit for me.”
Since joining the pathology team, Sam’s role has evolved as he collaborates closely with a wide array of experts across toxicology, genomics, biological sciences, formulations, computational methods and more. “I’ve had the opportunity to work with incredible mentors from various fields, who’ve not only taught me to ask the right questions but also helped me understand the broader scientific landscape,” he explains. This dynamic, interdisciplinary environment has allowed him to make meaningful contributions early in his career, gaining insight into how diverse expertise drives scientific innovation.
Capturing the Changemaker Spirit in Six Words
We recently asked Sam if he could create a six-word story about what being a changemaker meant to him. He summed it up with, “Initiative sparks change and inspires others.” For Sam, taking initiative isn’t just about implementing new tools—it’s about being intentional and finding where he can make the greatest impact. His focus on meaningful improvements led him to explore how AI could streamline workflows. "With ChatGPT, I automated a process that saved us eight hours every other week and significantly reduced computational hours. This was especially impactful because I was part of a small team,” Sam shares. This improvement allowed the team to focus on more critical tasks like interpreting results and exploring deeper scientific questions. Sam’s drive to improve efficiency didn’t just change workflows; it inspired others to think about how they could improve their work too.
Sam’s dedication to innovation and the support of others mirrors his commitment to the community. As a leader of Moderna’s employee resource group (ERG), UNIDOS, Sam is passionate about creating inclusive environments. “I grew up in Chelsea, MA, and directly benefited from people believing in me and supporting me. I wanted to give back,” he says. UNIDOS aims to promote professional development by celebrating the contributions of our Hispanic and Latino colleagues, offering a safe space for our team members to share their voices and uplift others. Through UNIDOS, Sam is helping to drive meaningful connection and belonging across Moderna.
Looking to the Future
Looking ahead, Sam is excited about the potential for growth in both science and leadership. “I want to be involved in solving today’s biggest problems. I’m passionate about using business as a force for good, transforming not only technology but entire industries,” he shares. With long-term plans to pursue an MBA, Sam envisions leveraging his scientific expertise and leadership skills to create a broader impact.
Reflecting on his journey, Sam feels grateful for the opportunities he's had at Moderna. “It’s a privilege to be here at a company that’s had an impact across the world, but also cares about their people as individuals,” he shares. For Sam, the combination of innovative science and a supportive, people-first environment has fueled his growth.
