Today we are announcing validation of Moderna’s near-term and net-zero science-based targets by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).

Validation of our targets by SBTi helps to ensure that Moderna’s journey to net-zero is aligned with the latest climate science. This milestone reflects our commitment to building a sustainable future through an ambitious road map for the transition to a low-carbon economy.

We are committed to reaching net-zero GHG emissions across scopes 1, 2 and 3 by 2045. This is supported by purposeful near- and long-term targets designed to provide consistent progress toward this goal:

  • Near-term, Moderna commits to reducing absolute Scope 1 and Scope 2 GHG emissions 90% by 2030 from a 2021 base year. We also commit that 85% of our suppliers—by emissions covering purchased goods and services, capital goods and upstream transportation and distributions—will have science-based targets by 2028.

  • Long-term, Moderna commits to maintaining a minimum of 90% absolute Scope 1 and Scope 2 GHG emissions from 2030 through 2045 from a 2021 base year. We also commit to reducing absolute Scope 3 GHG emissions 90% by 2045 from a 2021 base year.

Our near-term goals remain consistent, and Moderna will reduce GHG emissions by 90% in Scope 1 and 2 by 2030. We will reach net zero in Scope 3 by 2045, at which time we will also be considered net zero as to all scopes by SBTi.

SBTi validation reinforces our dedication to building our company in a way that protects the planet and minimizes adverse impacts on the environment. This underpins our sustainability strategy, which is centered on three core pillars: sustainability by design, natural resource conservation and the decarbonization of our value chain. Key initiatives supporting this strategy include:

  • Sustainability by Design: Designing and constructing new energy efficient manufacturing locations and incorporating LEED design principles. Our new manufacturing sites and corporate headquarters minimize fossil fuel consumption through installation of heat pumps and/or electric boilers.

  • Natural Resource Conservation: Executing energy efficiency projects, purchasing renewable energy and electrifying fossil fuel equipment at existing locations.

  • Decarbonize Value Chain: Engaging with value chain partners to set science-based targets, using hydrotreated vegetable oil for transportation and distribution in select European shipping routes, transitioning to maritime transportation for raw materials and consumables and providing ‘green commuter’ benefits and access to free electric vehicle charging at our manufacturing facilities and corporate headquarters.

Over the past few years, we have made significant progress in our ongoing journey to achieve net-zero and having Moderna’s goals verified by the SBTi was an important step. We are scaling Moderna with net zero goals integrated into our decision-making processes, which will have a long-term positive impact for the environment and the business.
