Teaming up with Coursera to Make mRNA Education Available to All

Through the power of mRNA, Moderna is reimagining how medicines are made and transforming how we treat and prevent diseases for everyone. Our scientific breakthroughs are fueled by our people, who are obsessed with learning every day.

Today, we are proud to announce the launch of mRNAs as Medicines, a free course on the Coursera platform offering a comprehensive overview of mRNA medicines, how they work and their potential applications.

Moderna and Coursera share a commitment to advancing scientific education and innovation and making a positive impact on society. Offering the course for free significantly enhances its accessibility, allowing students, scientists and medical professionals interested in continued education, and all learners globally, to gain a valuable understanding of mRNA technology.

Coursera is one of the largest online learning platforms in the world, with 148 million registered learners.¹ It's a place where educators, learners, and institutions come together to access courses offered by more than 325 universities and industry experts, making it a truly global and dynamic learning ecosystem—helping us reach people across the globe.

An estimated 3.5 million STEM jobs² will need to be filled in the U.S. by 2025, and Moderna is committed to helping ensure that people have access to the knowledge they need to leverage emerging technologies. With this new initiative, we hope to empower learners with a comprehensive understanding of mRNA science, how it represents a new era of medicine, and its power to positively impact human health.

Moderna has been a leader in establishing the field of mRNA medicine. Our mRNA vaccine for COVID-19 helped hundreds of millions of people worldwide combat the pandemic. This interactive course, designed with Coursera and experts at Moderna, shares how mRNA can be applied in modern medicine, including vaccines and therapies for infectious diseases, immuno-oncology, rare diseases, and more.

mRNAs as Medicines is divided into three modules:

Module 1: Introduces the fundamental concepts of proteins and mRNAs, explaining their structures, how they are made, and the crucial roles they play in the human body.

Module 2: Covers classic molecular approaches to developing medicines and how recent technological advances have expanded our options, exploring how proteins and mRNAs can be used as medicines.

Module 3: Explores the diverse types of mRNA medicines and their potential applications in preventing and treating diseases, including the use of mRNA medicines as vaccines and therapies for existing conditions, as well as their potential in treating genetic disorders and in regenerative medicine.

Anyone with a keen interest in modern advancements in medicine can glean valuable insights and knowledge from mRNAs as Medicines. For more information on the course and to get started, visit the Coursera website.
